Continuation from previous post.
Is the person supportive of me?
Someone who is supportive cares about your well being and hopes the best for you whether it is running a campaign for a club or going through surgery. Someone who cares about you values you enough to even be concerned about something you do and wants you to succeed. We meet so many people going through our lives but will only end up caring about a small fraction of the bunch. The people we don’t about we often forget about just like the people we don’t even know exist. If they are not in our concern, we never think if they are okay or if they could be dying this second.
Does he or she treat me with respect?
It may feel obvious but many people can be addicted to toxic and respect-less relationships/friendships. People believe that having relationships with people that have respect will lead to good rather than leading to negative events such as hitting each other or getting into toxic arguments where no one wins. Philosophers and Psychologist believe people can be addicted to respect-less relationships with people because that’s what they grew up with when they were children. The sense of familiarity can give them a belief that it’s okay to be reckless around a partner and that suffering is only a part of a relationship with a partner or friend.
Is this a person I feel that I could trust?
One aspect of trust is feeling we won't be done wrong over a long period of time. When we're at good terms with someone, we can easily trust them but what if those terms took a bad turn? Could you still trust them with anything personal or something that leaves you vulnerable? Usually we won't open up to someone who we can't trust is good. If they are untrustworthy, we push them away.
Remember saying “Yes” to all these questions may not exactly determine if a friendship is great but it is a great way to analyze the friendships you have. If you realized something negative about a friendship you have with someone close, you can try overcoming it to build a stronger bond or maybe it was never a “Close” friendship to begin with.
