One of the best I saw was Luis R talking about cars. It seemed so genuine to his heart regardless of his energy. Something I recommend to all students is to have more energy to at least seem they are into their speech. It makes it more enjoy as an audience member.

Daily Journal #54: Apostrophe Paragraph — Again!
It's hard to understand why people decide to buy certain cars. Even though a person's old car might be running fine, once he sees one of the new models, he's not going to be happy until he has traded in his old car. John, one of my best friends, is a good example of a victim of “new car fever.” John's 1993 Camaro was running fine, but when he saw the advertisements for the 1996 Camaro, with more valves for extra fuel injection and a sleek, sporty new air foil, he thought of thousands of reasons why he needed a new car. John's girlfriend didn’t see much of him for several Saturdays while he was listening to this salesman's sales pitch and looking at that dealer's display. Meanwhile, his girlfriend had started going out with an old friend of hers and John's. She says she doesn’t mind going out in her new boyfriend's 1968 pickup at all. Now John's got a new car, but is looking for a new girl to go out with, preferably one who will be impressed with his new car's extra valves.

Daily Journal #35: Personal Opinion on Brave New World
From this story, I see two forces that pinned against each other and I question myself where I stand in it. Happiness versus Freedom. In this story we find all in England are made to be happy with what they are programmed to do and forget their individualistic ideals and thoughts. Bernard is one citizen that has his own sense of individuality by wanting to do what he wants instead of what he is brought up to do. Happiness is an amazing emotion that brings great light into ones life and freedom gives one the right to do what their hearts and minds long for exploring but deciding on only having one places me in confusion.

Across the sky from East to West, the clouds stretched like white ribbons. In the middle of the dark forest, the trail marker reassured us. When we reached the waterfall, we saw a rainbow. We looked at each other and said, “Well, we may be able to climb up that cliff.” We climbed from one ledge to another. When we finally reached the top, we jumped up and down and cheered at the tops of our lungs. From the top of the cliff, we raced each other back to the bottom, which was probably not the safest idea. Once we got back down, we decided to swim under the waterfall. It was one of the greatest adventures we ever had together.

Daily Journal #32: Goal Setting
My goal for the next twenty weeks is to not only maintain "A's" in the majority of my classes but being able to have even more fun with my close friends and new friends. My goal this year is to learn how to focus on anything I have to complete. I always felt I had trouble focusing on things that don't interest me. In English class, I want to maintain my "A" and put in a lot of effort in class and studies to easily understand classwork and make projects a breeze.

Word choice in a passage can easily change the attitude and tone of the text. This change can make a normal night into a dark and scary experience or a regular morning into a the most beautiful and inspiring day. Words with different attitudes and the same meaning are most likely connotations.

Daily Journal #28: Opinion on Swift?
My initial thoughts of Swift are that he has connections with cannibalism despite this being a satire text. I began to believe this when he claimed to know an American "acquaintance in London" that knows "that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled." After reading the text, Swift claimed that he wants to help the less fortunate in Ireland and offers solutions to make a change that is not cannibalism.

Daily Journal #26: Student Perception Survey
In your own blog post, please provide more detailed feedback for me regarding this class. If you can, please include at least one positive aspect of this class and one negative aspect. Suggestions:
I find this class boring because we do a lot of reading that does not interest me heavily.
One thing I enjoy about this class is being able to discuss with my partner to get a better understanding if I didn't have so already.
This class is too challenging because articles and text we read is with high academic language or from a different era.
In this class, I would like more opportunity to practice learned topics and strategies.
I feel this class is/is not preparing me for college because we don't take notes like we would in a college.
I appreciate when Mrs. Sanwald appreciate the students who are trying and behaving in her class. She is so supportive!
I wish Mrs. Sanwald would give one assignment at a time. Multi-tasking is not efficient in general. Ex: Having students focus on preparing for a rhetorical analysis test while making sure we are working on our protest project.

Daily Journal #22: Parts of an argument
An argument has multiple parts: a claim, multiple supporting evidence, counter claim, rebuttal, and conclusion.
The claim is in the introduction and is where the author gives his position on a subject. Maybe the writer is writing against or for abortion.
Supporting evidence is used to explain why the authors claim is correct.
The counter claim is used to give information of the opposing argument.
The rebuttal explains why that the counter claim is not correct to make the authors claim stand stronger.
The conclusion is where the author wraps up his ideas and usually proposes a plan of action to do.

Daily Journal #17: Summarize MLK So Far
MLK jr. has been arguing that the Vietnamese war is a waste of lives, money, and against peace in humanity. He spoke about real events such as how America tried to aid France reclaim a lost colony rather than primary help South Vietnam. He uses his award of the Nobel piece prize as a way to add credibility to his words. He also spoke about how we can grow as a nation if we see from the eyes of the opposition.

Daily Journal #15: Logical Fallacies
Yes the most notable presidential candidate is Donald Trump with his notorious logical fallacies. One of the biggest fallacies he has made was that "Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people." He is implying that everyone that comes to American from Mexico is either a drug dealer, criminal, rapist, or someone that just has problems that ruins the American country. This fallacy is a hasty generalization. I heard this on the internet first as it was spreading like wildfire.

Daily Journal #14: Protest
I agree with Wiesel's quote because the people who are neutral in a fight between a suppressor and victim are only helping the suppressor do harm by not getting in their way. Victims need to raise and stop their suppressor and doing nothing will only make things worse.
The image of an African American boy with his face painted white and the word "vote" on his forehead is a form of protest. The image is showing how Black Americans didn't have a right to vote years ago. Whites suppressed Blacks and being neutral helped whites get their way.

Daily Journal #12: Bilingualism Essay Progress
So far I was only able to write my intro paragraph . If Ms. Brown graded that paragraph, I would receive a 3 on Focus, 1 on Development, 3 on Audience, 1 on Cohesion, 3 on Language and style, and a 3 on Conventions. I would receive a 1 on both audience and development because the introduction paragraph has no quotes to support my thesis. My body paragraphs will however. I gave myself threes on the rest of the criteria because I am confident I am writing in the right direction.

Daily Journal #7: Firoozeh's X-ray Glasses
When Dumas changed her name to "Julie" she began to feel more accepted by the American society. Others were not turned away from her because they could easily pronounce her new name. Since Dumas gave herself an American name, looked White, and spoke without an accent, many Americans believed she was American. When The Iranian revolutions took place, many Americans started to show hatred against Iranian people. Dumas would see how they spoke negatively about her nationality right in front of her. No one could have guessed Dumas was Iranian, so they weren't afraid to talk badly. Later we see Dumas wanting to get fired and fails when she uses her real name. After she changes it back to Julie, she gets hired right away. I think using the name Julie was a good decision to get through the racial discrimination she had to face in America.

Daily Journal #6: Differences among Bilinguals
In Lan Cao's "The Gift of Language," we can see how someones individual culture is changed. When the narrator learned English and American culture, she grows into a different version of herself. She is no long tied to her Vietnamese roots and culture. The narrator had to teach her mother how to live in America. Immigrants who move to the United States leave behind a culture and learn a new one. American born bilinguals learn a new culture but never leave behind there original.

Daily Journal #4: One Idea From "Mother Tongue"
In "Mother Tongue" Amy Tan describes a moment when her mother needed help to talk to a stock broker for her money. The stock broker didn't take Amy's mother seriously because of her "Broken" English. After she passed the phone to Amy, Amy used her academic English to talk to the stock broker for mothers money. The stock broker took her seriously and was going to have the money delivered on time. These different types of Englishes are respected at different levels. Most people have more respect to the speakers who are able to use complex words and sentence structures in communication then the speakers who don't have proper pronunciation or grammar. I believe the biggest reason why that "broken" English is not taken seriously is because it cannot be used to communicate clearly with many people. Amy understands and respects her mothers English while some of her friends have no idea what she is trying to say. The lack of communication skills looks inferior to the speakers who are fluent. I could use her text to support or counter claim my essay thesis.

Daily Journal #3: Should we use all of our "Englishes"?
In Amy Tan's speech, "Mother Tongue" Tan talks about the different types of "Englishes" she uses when talking to different audiences. When she talks to large groups, Tan uses her academic language to explain and discuss in detail. When she talks to her mother, Tan doesn't use the same English. She talks in a "broken" form of English that she heard growing up from her Asian mother. Many people wouldn't understand her if Tan and her mother spoke in their "broken" English. Tan believes we should use all of our "Englishes" and use them proudly because they are apart of our life. I believe that we shouldn't use all of our "Englishes" to just anyone. The best English to use is the one that is most understood. I don't think no one should be embarrassed of their "Englishes", but people need great communication to interact. Using an English that isn't understood can lead to confusion instead of efficiency.

Daily Journal #2: Amy Tan's Bilingualism
According the "Mother Tongue," Amy comes from an Asian background. She pushed herself to master the English language instead of studying math or science like other Asians she knew. Although she spoke academic English in front of large crowds, Amy usually speaks to her mother in a language she called "broken English." She spoke without correct grammar to her mother because her mother spoke to her in a "broken" manner throughout her life. Amy's mother didn't speak academic English, for English was not her first language and she never had taken the English courses Amy did. Many people would only speak English would have no idea what Amy's mother is trying to say, but Amy understands everything as if she was speaking with proper grammar. Knowing these two forms of languages has been useful when she had to talk to a stock broker. The stock broker didn't take Amy's mother seriously. Amy used her academic voice and demanded Amy's mothers pay check on time. The broker got the message.

Daily Journal #1: What's it like to be bilingual in the United States?
I am bilingual. At least to some degree. My main language is English and my second is Spanish, but I wouldn't call myself a fluent Spanish speaker. Here in California, there are many people who only speak Spanish like my grandparents do. Being able to understand what they are saying allows me to communicate with them. I can help them when they need it and tell them how my day was since they ask me every hour. Being bilingual feels like I'm apart of two different worlds and it is. There is culture in all languages and being able to be connected to both opens my eyes to different perspectives of life and culture. Being able to understand two languages in California is very useful! Since there are Spanish speakers, I am not afraid to talk to them and fear not understanding them. There is also lots of Latino culture that I enjoy and understand. I would personally learn many languages to open my view even further.
